The second eye contact

When you hear the frequent, "Hey Dad, watch this," it's not the first eye contact that counts, it's the second. They look to see you're watching, and then when they're done doing whatever it is they're doing, like clockwork there is a second look for eye contact that in my experience means a lot more than the first in terms of them feeling seen. They repeat when you miss the second eye contact. And they smile more when you deliver that second eye contact. So if you start to watch, see it through. It's worth it.--Father of three boys.
