Which crib do we pick? That is the question keeping me from sleeping at night.

I'm a first time mom. My boyfriend and I would like to build our sons crib as a fun project together with all this free time thanks to corona virus. We need to pick out a mattress so we know what size to make our crib and I've been looking around feeling overwhelmed. How do I know if one is too soft or too firm without being able to shop in person in a real store? I've been interested in the newton baby mattress but I don't know if it's actually any safer or if it's an overpriced gimmick. What do you all think? What do you have?
