Son did really well in 2nd grade. For 3rd grade, he was placed in an advanced class. He's having a hard time with English.During the last parent-teacher conference, the teacher mentioned that he's struggling with writing and reading comprehension. But she also said she sees that he's very determined so she's not that worried. The teacher mentioned that he tries to rush to answer questions. I see this a lot when I help him with homework. There was a question about nectar (related to blend of fruits). I gave him a multiple choice question: What can you make nectar from: (a) bee (b) mango (c) cupcakes (d) cheesecake. He answered a, while it's technically correct, but not based on the definition he was given. That's probably a poor example since it was a trick question, but I was hoping to see if he would read all the choices first before jumping to an answer. There was a story in his reading about parents are trying to tell the son about how he will be a big brother soon. The question: "What is the "surprise message" in the passage, and how is it delivered?" He responded, "By the doctor taking out the baby."A lot of times his sentences are very long, or it doesn't answer the question, or he'll just ramble on instead of answering the question. It's been a struggle to help him with his English homework. He gets upset at himself. I don't know what I can do. I always try to reinforce that it's okay, as long as he tries his best. I always try to reinforce that I love him. When he gets that hard on himself, I get frustrated myself and tell him that we can't continue if he's being like that. I don't know that's a good way I handled the situation? What really broke my heart is I've noticed he's been writing that he's dumb and stupid on the margins when he gets things wrong. Please, anyone, know how I can help my son improve his English? What am I doing wrong? What can I do when he starts being too hard on himself? Should I ask the school to put him back to a regular class?TL;DR! - Son being hard on himself as he struggles with 3rd-grade English. What can I do to change his attitude? What can I do to help him with his English? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2OfW9z4
