Do you involve your kids in toy clearouts?

Kiddo is 4, recently had Christmas and birthday. We have way too many toys. We usually keep 10 or so upstairs, the rest stored in the basement and we swap them on request or periodically.We want to get rid of a bunch of old stuff he hasn't touched in a long time or was never really into, but he has an uncanny ability to ask for a toy that we just got rid of (even one he hasn't played with in a year), then he gets upset. I tried asking him to help me choose some toys that he doesn't play with to give away, and he said he needs to keep everything (understandably).So...purge without telling him, and deal with the upset when he finds out?As an example, he has a dollhouse, played with it for 2 days, then didn't touch it. Moved it to the basement a year ago. A few weeks ago he asked to play with it randomly, brought it upstairs, he played with it for 20 minutes and hasn't touched it since.
