Are your standards for your kids higher than they are for you?

I have a 5-year-old and am starting to realize all the ways I am less disciplined than I want him to be. No iPad until he cleans his room? Our bedroom looks like a storage facility that someone moved into to save money. No allowance before chores? What chores? My wife and I do whatever we can whenever we have time. No candy before dinner? Sure, most of the time. But what about when you want a piece of candy before dinner? Why not? Don't even get me started on table manners. Mine are horrific (although that's one I am committed to improving, because it is straight-up embarrassing to go out to dinner with my kid, and it's clear in this case that he needs better examples).Is this tension normal?
