We are intending to spend Christmas with my parents for the first time (international flight). It may very well be my father's last Christmas. While we are visiting, my kid (the only grandchild) is having a birthday. He is just at the age where he understands birthdays and is excited about his.So far, my parents have bought him almost everything from his birthday/Christmas list (so nothing left for other relatives to buy, meaning my kid is going to get WAY too much stuff that we will have to bring back with us, and he is very much not materialistic), they have bought decorations for his "birthday party", ordered a cake (that none of us, including my kid, can eat due to intolerances), and are now talking about ordering matching Christmas clothing for us all to wear.I get that they are excited, I am happy that they are looking forward to seeing their only grandkid on his birthday and Christmas for the first time, but holy cow. I am feeling overwhelmed by it and I'm an adult.I spoke to them today and asked them (politely) to cease and desist all birthday prep, and cancel the cake order. I'm fine with them taking over Christmas, but I at least want my kid to have a say in his own birthday.Besides biting my tongue so hard it'll bleed, any other advice on how to get through very well-meaning but over-excited family during the holidays? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2DqI252
