12-yr old and labels, identity, etc.

My daughter goes to a school for 6th thru 12th graders, and has a lot of friends older than her because of this. Recently she told us that she is asexual and we were pretty surprised since we'd never talked to her about labels like that. Then she went on to explain that one of her friends is trans, another is a lesbian, another is bi, etc. So my husband and I got the impression that everyone she knows has a label/identity, except her, so she came up with one.On the list of labels "asexual" is pretty boring. I mean, she's 12, I bloody hope she's not interested in sex. But didn't that used to be the "default" for a middle school kid?? When I think of the labels we had growing up, it was things like nerd, or goth, etc. Am I just old in thinking that a lot of these "identities" are ridiculous? For about 4 years when she was younger she told everyone she was a wolf. Literally. She would crawl around the floor with the dog. We just wrote it off as childish roleplaying. We even got her a costume (cosplay). My husband and I joked that if that had happened today, she'd have a Tumblr about being trans-species.I'm not really sure if I should ignore her labeling herself, or try to address it. Or how to address it, even. Just the idea of her labeling herself bothers me on a subconscious level (I don't want other people labeling & stereotyping her, either).I could use some outside thoughts and opinions, please. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2t4rRpU
