My stepdaughter and I have a fantastic relationship. We adore each other, we're constantly playing, reading together, etc. No ill will at all, I've been in her life since she was 4.Today she asked me to braid her hair before we left for an Easter parade. I gave her fancy "elsa" braids, but when she looked in the mirror she said she didn't like them and asked me to put in normal braids. I was running late and hadn't even had a chance to dry my own hair but I did her a favor and said I'd re-do them.I was picking up her hair brush when out of absolutely nowhere she came up behind me and smacked me right in the genitals very hard.Immediately I said "(name)! That was very painful! Never do that again! Say you're sorry." She apologized and I quickly gave her braids. We were all running late and I didn't have time to tell her dad what happened before we left. When we were walking to the parade and stepdaughter was running a bit ahead of us, I quietly told him what had happened. He said he would talk to her later. We went to the parade, had ice cream, and came home.As soon as we got home he took her into her room and this conversation happened:dad: what happened with stepmom earlier?daughter: nothing, I don't knowDad: Don't give me that, tell me what happeneddaughter: I don't knowdad: did you hit her?daughter: yesDad: (lecture about why that's wrong) You love her right? and she loves you. You cannot hit people you love. If I find out that you're doing things like that I'm going to be very upset. Etc, etc, etc 10 minute lectureThen he told her to stay in her room for a while and think about what they talked about and she should apologize to me when ready. She's still in her room, hasn't approached me yet.Edit: she gave me a nice apologyDid we handle this correctly? She's never done anything like this before and I think we're both a little bit in shock. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2pgZFKr
