Can't turn my back on her

So I'm a SAHM and I'm doing the Ferber stuff now. She's one year old and I don't know what has happened but I can't turn my back on her or she'll start screaming and crying so much. Don't know what to do. Is this because of Ferber? Or is it just a phase? Should I not pick her up when she's doing her screaming, am I encouraging this behavior? Should I ignore her?
