Does context matter when reading to a toddler?

I've been reading all sorts of stuff to my 1 year old including board books, long-winded fairy tales and even some of my more complicated textbooks from my masters degree. When it comes to reading out loud to them, does it matter what exactly it is your reading? Because from what I know they benefit from hearing language and won't understand context unless you're teaching them stuff in a book (this is red, this is up, this is down, etc..).I need to get through some research-y reading for my career so can I just read it aloud to my kid with the same effect?
