how to deal with a grieving child

so we had to make the uneasy decision of putting our beloved dog ELI down on christmas eve.. he was suffering and I couldnt imagine his pain..we left them.with my mother and put him down explaining to our sons that he wasn't coming back but he will always be remembered.. midnight while wrapping g gifts ( I know I know last minute) we heard whimpering so we shot upstairs and he was sitting in this bed pitch black calling out for the dog.. mind you we are grieving as well since this was our child for 10 years b4 we adopted our boys... so we consoled him and I explained that if he closes his eyes and thinks real hard he can see ELI playing with him and pulling toys from him and sleeping next to him.. today with all the chaos and the presents I saw him look back and take a deep breath close his eyes and smile.. my heart broke like never before.. I just want wanted to say parenting makes things unorthodox and different everyone has their own way of teaching but I just wanted to offer some advice and maybe get some as well.merry christmas or happy holidays.. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2t0oOjB
