My son screams bloody murder when I leave his room at night

This only happens when I put him to bed and it started a couple weeks ago. He starts crying, screaming mommy, mommy. This is after a prolonged bedtime routine, a bunch of books, scratching his back, etc. I am starting to dread bed time.
