I'm so confused. When should preschoolers recognize letters/numbers, learn how to read?

My son is 3 years and 2 months. He doesn't recognize any letters or numbers. He can sing the alphabet song. He does better with numbers in that he can count how many of something, figure out which is more, and even figure out how much more or less he needs to get to a certain number (all from 1-10, like if he has 4 stickers he needs 6 more to have 10 so he can have a reward). I haven't been particularly stressed but had family tell me that I should start working on phonics with him and that he's behind since he can't recognize letters/numbers. I'm also not sure what the science/educators say about this stuff. He does go to a montessori preschool and they don't seem concerned he's falling behind. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2CFp8XT
