Dealing with kids using "kill yourself" as a playful insult.

My oldest is 11 years old. He is in middle school and has a pretty good amount of friends. I have noticed that a lot of them use the phrase "I'm going to kill myself" or "please kill yourself" as a playful insult. My husband coaches two of his sports teams and I think a lot of it started there. A kid would make a bad play and someone else would reply, "Wow, you should kill yourself" or someone would exclaim that they are going to kill themselves. My husband corrected it but it has continued outside of sports. My son can't play in their playoff game tomorrow due to a head injury and one of his friends said, "I would kill myself if I were you. That sucks."I know they don't really mean anything by it and this is mostly normal preteen boy behavior. My husband teaches middle school and coaches high school football in addition to our son's teams so he is aware of that as well. I know guys insult each other and don't mind it most of the time. I know my son dishes it out as well. This particular phrase is giving me pause though just because of how serious it can be. I feel like you never know someone's mental state and telling them to kill themselves can be dangerous. I know our local high school lost two kids to suicide last year. I also have a family member who committed suicide at 12.Am I overreacting to this? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2D7RH0W
