Why is soccer so popular, in America, for our kids to play. But isn't very popular for american adults to watch/play??

Is it availability? Is it that kids don't have to be 100% involved? What is it?I was watching chopped and they made the comment, "octopus is like soccer in america, it goes over well every where else, but not here".
