11 year old girl walk home alone?

My daughter is 11 and will be in middle school this fall. We pick her up from her elementary after school care everyday currently. It's really frowned upon to let elementary school kids walk home alone. We live a 10 minutes walk from her elementary school, and the bus driver from her summer program would wait for me to drive to get her when I was a few minutes late to the bus stop. She was not allowed to wait by herself. I don't know what would have happened if I'd have asked her to walk home. CPS would have been called?I think that was a little extreme. But I think because of this I'm apprehensive about letting her walk home from middle school. Both parents work, and earliest we get home is 5, school ends around 4. The walk is 20-30 minutes through our neighborhood. My neighbor is concerned about her walking too, and has offered to pick her up with her children. This contributes to my fear, too. There have not been any kidnappings in our area, or any crimes that have me particularly worried.I kind of want my daughter to have some independence, and I think walking would be good for her health, too. Husband agrees with me. Daughter thinks she's ready. We'll get her a cell phone to check in when she leaves school and gets home. Could you guys way in? I've seen some posts about this, but thought a little background of my own fears would help. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2GsNZ46
