Bike Helmet PSA

We’ve always enforced the helmet rule for our girls (5yo twins). It didn’t matter if they were on their scooters, balance bikes, or when they finally upgraded to pedal bikes this Fall. Helmets all the time. I’m glad we did.Yesterday our girls were biking at a park and one of them took a small-ish hill and did okay. We’ve been practicing using the hand brakes smoothly rather than slamming them on at the last minute. She had a little wiggle of the handlebars but did fine. Her sister went and the same wiggle happened. Only this one goes out of control and she takes a header into the pavement. She comes up with blood all around her mouth and eyebrow. After 5 hours in the ER (3 of that was just for stitching her up) we got her home to bed. The little badass never once cried. Told the doctor “That doesn’t even hurt.” on four separate occasions. When we first arrived at the ER and her sister started lagging behind us, she yelled out sister’s name from my arms so I wouldn’t leave her sister behind. Even covered in blood she was still looking out for her sister. Gotta love that twin bond! We’ve always allowed our girls a ton of freedom to explore their limits (they’ve been rock climbing since they were 10months!) but I’m still feeling a ton of guilt for not being more vigilant with teaching them better braking skills.Anyway, all this is to say that helmets are an absolute must! This wasn’t a high speed fall from a great height but it didn’t take much to do some serious damage. Her helmet was scraped up from the impact and definitely did its job.Tl;dr - WEAR YOUR HELMET AND MAKE YOUR KID WEAR THEIRS! And make sure they are properly adjusted. Meaning it sits mid-forehead and not pushed way back. Lots of resources online for how to properly fit a helmet. via /r/Parenting http://bit.ly/2UYKkia
