How do I tell my son that it is ok he isn't as fast as the other kids?

My son is bummed that he isn't as fast and strong as the other kidsHe is a kindergartener and has a summer birthday. My wife and I contemplated red-shirting him, but he's incredibly bright, so we did not feel he would be hindered academically as one of the youngest child in the class.Scholastically, we were correct! My son is reading just as well as any other student in the class. We do math problems together as a quiet-time activity. He does a masterful job of creating stories and, more importantly (to me at least), recounting the story in great detail even days after reading a story. His art is drawn in great detail, often times trying to mimic the world around him.Socially.. eh. He does ok. He had a tough time at the beginning of the school year making friends, but we no longer have dinners where he tells us he didn't specifically play with any kids.Physically, however, he has been left behind. He's really not as physically gifted even on par with kids closer to his age, let alone those who are many months older than him. He's not fast at all. In soccer, when he gets the ball, sometimes he just stands there with it as he doesn't know exactly what to do.I'm trying to find a balance between telling him that it is ok that he isn't as fast as the other kids, but at the same time I would like to figure out a way to say that he can still practice running faster. My wife has always had issues of insecurity as she always "compared herself to someone smarter, prettier, better at everything." (Her words, not mine.) One thing we definitely don't want to happen is for my son to fall down that same path of constantly comparing oneself to others.Parents of /r/parenting, help! What should we say? How should we approach the subject? Any suggestions would be helpful! via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2wOLOnc
