My son actually remembered "what to do if you're lost"!

We were traveling out of town recently, and my son (7) got slightly separated from us in a small grocery store. I knew where he was but he looked up and I didn't realize he couldn't see me. He looked around a bit, walked down an aisle and then approached another woman who had a child with her and said "Excuse me? I think I need your help...." At this point I still didn't realize that he hadn't seen me, and I thought maybe he was asking her for help getting something from a shelf or something, so I came over and said "Hey kiddo, what do you need, I can get it for you" and he looked at me with surprise and said "Oh there you are, I couldn't find your or dad so I was asking another parent for help."We've always told him that if he ever couldn't find us, that he should first look for another family or parent for help, and if none are around, a worker at the store, security guard/police officer, or any other adult if none of those are to be found. And HE DID IT! I honestly and actually teared up because he is a shy kid who would normally never approach a stranger voluntarily, but he thought he was lost, and he asked a mom for help!! I get a lump in my throat thinking about it right now. When the other mom realized what he'd been about to ask her, she praised him too, saying "Oh I would have been happy to help you find your parents, I'm so glad you asked!" and then turning to her own similarly aged kid and saying "You should do the same thing if you're ever lost; find another mom!!"It was just a nice validation that some of the repeated reminders are actually sinking in. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2KKTfOz
