Simple background. I live in Germany and my daughter is about to start school at the end of August. And while I understand that it is a rite of passage everywhere, it just seems a little crazy here, with extended family attending the send-off, and presents and whatnot. But the bit that really gets me is the school bag situation. Kids are expected to turn up with special school bags that fit all their (heavy) stuff, are ergonomically designed for kids, and look super cool all at once. It is a key part of the starting school experience, and apparently it's important not only to have a bag that is functional but that meets the needs of building status and self-esteem. Stores hold special events to build up the anticipation and advise you on what is the perfect bag for your little genius. So the bags that are being sold to 6 year olds with all the coolest characters and designs with matching pencil cases and sports bags etc cost well in excess of 200 euro (that's about US$250, folks). For an effing kid's backpack! Sure, there are some cheaper options, but there isn't much in that price range and you kind of get the feeling your kid is going to be the loser kid from day 1 if you go that route.Seriously, it can't be like this in sane countries, can it? I feel like I'm losing my mind with the stress of buying a bloody school bag!So, what's it like where you live? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2IJ8mH2
