Helping a young child (almost 5 year old) increase their stamina?

I’ve posted here before and got some helpful advice. She had some issues with her teacher but last term his attitude towards her had a huge turnaround and things got 100% better at school. She’s also had a huge leap in her language delay and will be heading back to speech therapy next year to have a look at where she’s at.She’s recently started going to OT once a week to help with her sensory seeking behaviour which can be quite disruptive at school if not redirected into something positive. Her OT is confident that once her sensory input is met in healthier ways that she would have an easier time with schooling and has given us some great advice for when we go back to school next year. One of our biggest issues though is she has very little stamina to keep doing something when she’s not good at it initially or not interested. This makes OT/speech therapy/school quite difficult because if she doesn’t initially do well at it, it’s hard to get her to stay on task. While this is a pretty normal for a 4-5 year old, her stamina is extra low, particularly if she’s not good at something straight away. We try not to do things for her and we do encourage her to keep trying even when it doesn’t work the first time but it’s still quite difficult and she tends to fall back on what she’s most familiar with (eg; games she knows well, tasks she’s good at etc). She’s super independent and is really good at self care (brushing hair, getting dressed, making herself breakfast/lunch) and once she gets the hang of something she’s normally alright at it. It’s just getting her to stick at it long enough to master it that’s the issue. I would love some ideas from other parents as we’re on school holidays at the moment and it’s a good time to practice some skills for next year. I’m considering trying a timer to get her to try a task for X amount of minutes before going onto something else (like trying to write for 2 minutes before heading outside).TL;DR my child battles to stay on task if she’s initially not good at it, which hinders her ability to practice and get good at it. Would love some ideas to start stretching out her stamina to stick at something for longer periods. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2l1VTEb
