Fighting with 6 y/o about hair

My daughter has curly, super thick hair that will mat if we don't do anything with it. The problem is she hates me touching it and every single morning has become a fight. Like a tantruming, screaming meltdown the moment I get out the brush. The last few days she's woken up and immediately started throwing a fit knowing she's going to get her hair brushed at some point. She's a huge drama queen in general but this is over the top even for her. I've tried letting her pick out hair products, styles, she doesn't care. I usually straighten it with a flat iron which makes it more manageable but she's started resisting that too. Her main complaints are that getting her hair done hurts and "smells weird" and that she wants to be left alone in the mornings. I've tried rewarding her for sitting still but she's never made it long enough to get a reward. This is an extension of a bigger issue, I'm picky about the way my kids dress and she would be happy going around in a potato sack. We argue about clothes a lot. I can't just leave her hair alone because it mats. Any ideas on makings our mornings less miserable? Should I just get her hair cut short? She's very against that but I don't know what else to do if she won't let me take care of it. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2tL9uls
