Trick for getting a 5yo to follow directions the first time?

Obviously there's not magic code for getting kids to listen, but I'm curious what has worked for others. My bfs daughter is 5 and it usually take several times telling her to do something or standing over her while she does it. I've tried talking to her telling her it's easier for all parties to just listen the first time. However it's not effective. It's becoming an issue at my parents' because they're trying to handle her but don't want to discipline. Then I come behind trying to be stern and tell her she needs to listen to adults etc.I get embarrassed getting after her. I worry I look like the evil step monster. Plus it's embarrassing to have a kid in public not listening.Phew.Any tips welcome! via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2hJ6wv4
