What do you think about excess homework?

This is not a story of just my child but of many high schoolers and for that reason I am posting this here. Our kids get up and leave for school at the crack of dawn and they spend a full day at school. Once they reach home the work has only begun. According to the National Education Association, students should only be doing about 10 minutes of homework per night per grade level. So for a tenth grader it should be 100 minutes which is 1:40 minutes. Correct me if I am wrong, but this calculation is not for just one subject. It looks like each teacher in my child's high school gives Homework that takes an hour or two to finish per day and the homework from all the teachers takes around 5-6 hours every day. There is always 8-10 hours of homework assigned during weekends and even during Christmas holidays most of the days were spent doing homework. With this kind of homework, our kids' mental and physical health will be severely affected. Life is not all about education, it is about having a balance where you are happy doing things you love, and spending time with your family and friends. What about the college prep? When the high school makes sure that kids have to be kept busy with HW even during holidays, how do they look for colleges, do extracurriculars or volunteer or participate in club activities and competition preparations?I hope the school can address the issue of sleep deprivation and stress due to dumping more than enough work at home so many kids do not go through depression, and other health issues. I hope the faculty can communicate regularly with one another about large upcoming assignments and not to overload on a daily basis with excessive Homework from all the teachers. I am fine with them getting occasionally slammed but not this frequently. I hope you can give purposeful homework based on student's individual needs and not just to extend class time to cover more material. From a concerned parent via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2HRjjYF
