My LO (20 mos) has a little "friend" who is 18 mos. His parents are people we've known for a long time but kind of keep our distance from now because they make a lot of parenting choices that we don't agree with and then announce it and ask for input, but the wife is really over-sensitive so you can't be honest and it's just uncomfortable. Example of parenting choices we don't agree with: Both our LO and theirs were about a month early. We hadn't seen them since theirs was born about two months prior to this but they'd post things on FB and one was a video of them basically cramming his mouth full of thick rice cereal (it looked like solid mashed potatoes for a visual) when he was two months old -- and being that he was a month early, that's like stuffing a month old infant's mouth full of thick rice cereal. They let him cry himself to sleep from the start, in a bed full of comforters, bumpers, tons of stuffed toys, etc. They've told, and shown us in person and on video, that he spends most of his days in their bed, sitting in front of the TV. When dad gets off work, he fires up the PS4 and games all night while his son sits there and stares at the screen as he plays GTA or MKX, COD, etc. That's just a few of the things we disagree on and then when they come around and see our LO they keep mentioning how "different" she is to theirs. Usually I politely say it must just be the two month difference in age but it's definitely NOT. He didn't even take his first steps till he was like 16 mos old. He says NO WORDS except he will babble "mamamamamama" and they think it's him saying "Mama". When he's here, he doesn't answer to his name, follow any kind of commands, or interact with her or anyone else really at all. He toddles around flapping his hands and doesn't seem to really even play. I don't think he's actually developmentally delayed. I waved at him several times the last time he was here, and smiled, and they nearly had a heart attack when, before he left, he waved and smiled at me. They were like, "OH. MY. GOD. He has NEVER done that for ANYONE before!!" It took me doing it maybe ten times before he picked it up. I think he just gets ZERO interaction or guidance from anyone. So when they're over here going, "Wow, [my LO] draws pictures? She talks so well! Look at how she plays with you just like a big kid! What's wrong with [their LO]? Do we have a dumb kid?" WTF should we be saying?! I've tried to subtly infer that maybe it's because we are constantly interacting with her and actually trying to teach her these things, etc., but the mom will get noticeably uncomfortable and defend their choices, like, "Oh, he would just rather watch TV than play with us! We're too boring for him! He loves watching Daddy play his games!" Etc. I even offered to have more playdates or even babysit on occasion just to try to help this kid out but they haven't taken me up on it. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2ILJ7Yr
