We live in a wealthier area of NYC and there are a few spots where homeless people hang out. My son bikes to school everyday and will occasionally pass by a homeless person. He has given money or has purchased food for the homeless before. We talk about being careful and he never had any issues. He saw homeless woman today and asked her if she wanted his scarf because she looked cold. She was with a man and the man yelled at my son. He apparently accused my son of wanting sexual favors and then threatened him. I am not going to say what he said but it was graphic. My son is very open with me and he didn't even want to tell me what the man said. My son was with a friend and the friend was the one who wanted to tell me.My son doesn't want to take any legal action and says he doesn't remember what the people looked like anyway. He said he has never seen this couple before. I am not coming here for legal advice but I would like some parenting advice. How do I make sure this doesn't ruin my son's giving spirit? We donate and spend time volunteering. We will continue doing that but I don't want this to make him view the homeless as bad people. We have talked about it and he says he doesn't think that but I want to make sure we handle this right. Is there anything else I should do to help him feel more safe? We have discussed again the importance of being careful. Should we be doing anything else?My son is going on 12. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2EDtfCj
