Dangers of Trampolines for young kids

Hi everyone, recently my 2.5 year old got injured playing on a trampoline and updated my Instagram with some warning info for my friends and family. While I dont post here, I figured I should post the info here too so it happens to no one else.Just a brief first. My son is going to have his leg in a cast for 1 to 1.5 months for an incident that I didnr think was seriously until I read on it. My son did not fall! He was just playing normally and apparently (I was not there) he suddenly started crying but he became quiet later on. He didn't cry at night except feeling uncomfortable standing, so when my wife called me I told her it probably wasn't anything serious (as a dad, I generally worry less). But apparently it was broken and in an area that can cause concerns for future growth (but not TOO concerning)! All just for jumping on a trampoline! Here is a pic of my brave son, Arad, in his cast http://ift.tt/2ulhrSh here is text I posted on my instagram,The lesson here is that trampoline jumping is dangerous, even though it looks harmless. KEEP YOUR CHILDREN AWAY FROM THEM.The danger is not just from falling but sometimes playing with older kids. The pressure from an older child jumping will force the mat to come up at a stronger force than the younger child can handle. The damage from such an incident is called "Trampoline Fracture" and occurs in the proximal tibia. It's occurs as a minor fracture in the tibia (spinal bone) under the knee. As it is near to a growth spurt, care has to be take to put in a cast. But as the fracture is linear and not angular from such incidents, there is no real long term danger but obviously early cast is a must. The strange thing is because the child does not fall, there is initially no concern. The child has no pain except bearing weight on the leg will be uncomfortable. The fracture is also so minor that inexperienced doctors might even miss it. Here are some facts on trampolines that I have read recently:1) The smallest child in a group playing trampoline has 14 times more chance of getting injured.2) Trampoline playing is 4 times more prone to injuries for 4-6 years old than soccer playing3) A 80 kg adult jumping with a 25 kg child means that if the mat comes up with full force while the child is coming down, thats equivalent to a child falling 3 meters.4) In a US study between 2002 and 2011, there was 1,002,735 injuries related to trampolines!5) Even though injuries were reported in scholary papers since the 80s, countries and companies haven't taken them seriously, therefore injuries have been on the rise.6) Medical institutions have issued warnings regarding this activity. I generally trust the "American Academy of Pediatrics" which has issued a statement regarding dangers of trampolines in 1999, 2006, and 2012. As per them, there is no data that netting and padding significantly decrease the risk of injury. The AAP advices pediatricians to actively discourage trampoline use. Please share this info with parents with young children.Hope this can be a warning to other parents and if it helps even one child, it will make this one month easier to deal with. Thank you for reading.P.S. I don't care about Karma (haven't even figured out what benefit it has yet) but would appreciate if you can upvote this so other parents see it too. I've been feeling absolutely rubbish and guilty for not knowing this before, and would love this info to be spread. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2vwc1SE
