Have you ever let your child ride in a car without a car seat before they had aged(/sized) out of it? Under what circumstances would you?

Just curious, sparked by some discussions I've had with parents I know from different cultures and childrearing philosophies. Have you ever let your child ride in a car without a car seat (before the child had grown old or heavy or tall enough for one)? What were the circumstances? If you haven't, are there any circumstances under which you would - a short distance, a foreign country with lax car seat laws, no alternative transportation (or worse alternatives), something else I'm not thinking of? via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/28PrmBe
