As a father how do I connect with my son and become a friend

I am a programmer and father of 2 sons: 4 and 7 years old. My wife is taking care of education part quite well and things in house but as son getting older he's getting a bit rough and often respond to the wife in disrespectful way. I belong to the family where men usually are high tempered.. Both kids don't show any kind of disrespectful attitude to me..probably due to my anger.Now, the way my son responds to wife is not pleasent and I now think of connect with my son and taking care of things which wife can't for his better up bringing.
