My six year old was a bit grumpy this weekend. A combination of not getting enough sleep and being bored because most of his neighborhood friends weren't available to play with him. By Sunday afternoon, I was looking forward to going back to work on Monday. He's struggled to learn to ride his bike without training wheels (stabilizers). He physically was capable of doing so, but the first time he tried he fell and then he refused to try again. We bought him a new bike, but even that wasn't enough of an incentive. All of the other kids that he hangs out with (including a four year old) were able to ride without training wheels, and I could tell my son was a bit embarrassed. If they were riding their bikes, he would run alongside them rather than riding with his training wheels.Last night, one of the friends came over. (I didn't realize it at the time, but this friend has been daring him to ride without his training wheels). My son picked up his bike that didn't have training wheels and told me he thought he could ride it. He stood in our driveway and his friend gave him a few tips. And then he rode it 10 feet! The look on his face -- and the look on his friend's face-- was priceless! They went into the street, and he took off riding -- screaming (I'm doing it! I'm doing it!). He was so happy, and he kept telling me how much fun it was and how proud he was of himself. And I completely forgot about how difficult he was earlier in the day.
