A midsummer move put my kids in school limbo. Am I doing the right thing?

I'm in a weird situation with moving and home-buying, and my kids are missing a little school because of it. I'd love to hear your thoughts and get some input on this.First question: Is it against the law to keep kids out of school?Second question: Am I doing everything I can?I'm going to try and keep this short, but I'm not making any promises on that.I have two kids in elementary school (9 and 6 years old), and they both do very well. Over the summer we moved about 5 hours away from their old school because of a better job opportunity. While shopping for a home near the new job my family has been staying with my sister. My sister lives nearby (about 30 minutes from the area we will live in), but is in a different state for whatever that's worth for school transfers. Here are the issues:My kids' old school started already. I called them before school started to let them know my kids wouldn't be there. They are holding my kids' school records until a new school requests them. They started wondering why the records hadn't been requested yet, and started calling my mom. I don't know why they didn't call me or my wife. My mom was the first emergency contact, though. I called them and explained everything again. The school district where I will be moving to started school already, but I can't enroll my kids there until I have an address and a utility bill proving my address in the school district. I called the new school and they said there is nothing they can do.Here at my sister's house the school year doesn't start until after Labor Day. So my sister's kids start school tomorrow. I don't want to start my kids in school here just to uproot them when we close on our new home. The question becomes: how close are we to closing on our new home? As far as I know we only need an appraisal, which is scheduled for this week. Assuming the house passes appraisal we can start the closing process. This is my first time buying a house, so I don't really know what's going on. I think we are only a couple weeks from having our house. Of course if anything comes up that stops us from getting the house, or delays the process at all, then we will immediately enroll them here where we are.Do you think I should start my kids in my sister's school district for a couple weeks and then move them to the new school? Am I going to get arrested for letting, no, MAKING my kids be truant? While my kids are out of school I have them doing workbooks and reading daily.Let me know what you would do, especially if you have experienced something like this. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2wAo9Vr
