When my (10F) and (8M) were young, their dad and I decided together that they wouldn't get cell phones until they were in high school or had after school activities. Now times have certainly changed the last decade and while their dad's opinion has wavered, I'm still firmly in the belief that my elementary school aged children do not need a phone. He's brought up making her a Facebook. The only reply I had to make him stop and think was "I'm just worried. I worry about the kids. I mean I see the ones that have had phones and social media since a young age. And hit middle school and they just put it all out there. It's terrifying. Plus I know how addictive it can be. I don't want them defining their self worth by how many follows or friends or likes they have." (I work in a middle school)I did get them a chromebook that they earn time on with chores. And I compromised with dad by making them both an email that we can give to family members and they can give to school friends. So they get on Hangouts and chat with us as well as aunts and uncles.So... am I just out of the loop? I'm trying to find a balance between protecting them and letting them have appropriate independence. Thank you! via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2fpsxiF
