I rambled and this ended up longer than I intended. TLDR at the bottom...It all started with searching for Paw Patrol on youtube. We ended up watching a clip, that led to someone playing with paw patrol toys... and to my surprised they liked the person playing with toys. They like it so much that they ask for that every time! (They want to watch the "Real Paw Patrol" ha ha ha)That wouldn't bother me so much, but it feels like my kids are basically watching extended toy advertisements. The first ones we watched seemed innocent, but it seems like the new ones don't even try to hide how much they're blatantly advertise toys to kids. They must getting paid by the toy companies: They make sure to include the official toy name in the videos etc.The worst ones are probably the "toy surprises". As far as toys go, they really aren't that great. They're cheap toys in a mystery box and they encourage you to collect them all. I've bought a few and my kids get bored of them really quick. They are not worth the money at all. They are expensive and overpriced. I think the worst part is that it is teaching my kid that they should get a toy surprise for everything. (going to the bathroom, sleeping, eating, cleaning playing)Another thing about these videos that bugs me is that they claim to be educational, but they only try to teach a few things like counting and colors. They don't even do a good job of teaching it either: the colors on some of the videos are pretty bad. (The orange looks yellow etc.) Or sometimes they use multicolored objects to try to teach a single color and it isn't clear. To this day, my little girl thinks that teal is silver. It doesn't matter how many times I correct her...I'm trying to make the most of it and find educational videos featuring toys since my little kids like the format, but I haven't found anything worthwhile. (nothing even close to PBS programming) Do you have any suggestions of educational kids toy channels or something? (preferably directed at kids age 1-5) I don't have a problem with the format at all... I just think a lot of the current content is junk.I understand that I am in control as the parent, but it's a bit frustrating that they always want to watch this format. Especially since TV is (unfortunately) a bit of a baby sitting device when I have an important / time-sensitive projects I need to get done.TLDR: My kids would rather watch stories on youtube made with toys than real TV shows. These youtube channels are basically giant advertisements that don't teach my kids anything. I feel guilty, but I need the distraction sometimes. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2reEprP
