31 year old mom here, never had a cavity and only just had my first experience getting a numbing shot in my mouth a few weeks ago when I needed a deep clean/root planing. I was pretty nervous beforehand and told my daughter kind of like this:“Well, I have to get a shot in my mouth and I’ve never had one, so I’m pretty nervous. But I’m just gonna take some deep breaths because I know it’ll be okay. Everyone tells me it doesn’t really hurt, and I know the dental work is going to be good for me, so I know it’ll be okay.”Then when I came back home with my numb mouth:“Hey, it wasn’t so bad! Isn’t it so funny how I’m talking?” And we giggled and I made some faces. I told her about it and said, “it really didn’t hurt at all! Just a little sting. I’m glad I was calm.”That was a few weeks before we found out she had her first cavity. So, now she has one. Her dad and stepdad and everyone have told me they’ve been getting cavities filled since they were kids and it’s been okay.My daughter doesn’t seem to be freaking out too much, but I want to make sure my own anxiety about how she’ll fair won’t get to her, so I’m defintely working on calming myself first. We told her about her cavity and called it a “sugar spot” and kinda giggled about how cute the phrase “sugar spot” sounded. I assured her the cavity wasn’t her fault and she’s great at taking care of her teeth like a big girl, but that most people get cavities, dad and stepdad and stepmom have gotten them, her friends at school have, and that the visit it totally no big deal. But in reality I am kinda dreading the visit!Any other tips? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2q9slHs
