As most parents know, a pacifier is often the lifeline to a baby and even small toddler. However in our household, the pacifier became even bigger than that. The temper tantrums surrounding a tiny piece of rubber were just absurd and we knew that it was time to get rid of the pacifier when my daughter was just over two years old.My wife came up with a good idea that my daughter took in really well to my surprise. A cousin of ours was having a baby shower and my wife explained to my daughter that a pacifier is temporary for babies and get's passed on when new babies are born. The plan was to gift wrap all paci's and hand them over to the mother of the new baby. So we explained to our cousin what we were planning, obviously not literally giving used pacifiers to her to use, but just to play along with the handing over of the "gifts".The plan worked like a charm and my daughter went cold turkey without a pacifier with next to no issues around 27 months. The key, I think, was that we sat her down and explained what we were going to do for the new baby a couple weeks in advance. Then, a week before the shower, we would ask her if she remembered what we talked about with the pacifier and reminded her that it was coming soon. The night before, we had another discussion right at bedtime, explaining that this would be the last night with the pacifier.Kudos to my wife because we were no longer subjected to the pacifier dependency in our home and it was a breath of fresh air. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/34JN1Zk
