I have a wonderfully sweet and sensitive 9-year-old son. He’s overweight for his age and has been for 2+ years now. I have had him to his pediatrician, who has both discussed healthy eating habits and done blood work to make sure it’s not an underlying condition (it’s not diabetes etc.) We are an active family and I encourage a lot of physical activity but it’s like pulling teeth with him ... he does basketball at school but that’s 30 minutes 2 days a week, all the other times he prefers video games or books - quiet, solitary, sedentary activities.I also have a 6-year-old daughter who is constantly on the move - she’s always doing monkey bars, she does swim team, she is always running or playing outside. She is thin for her age.I offer a variety of healthy foods but I don’t make huge deals out of things like cupcakes at parties or cookies at school lunch etc.Where as a parent do I start to explain to my son that he’s overweight and he needs to begin thinking about managing that? It breaks my heart but I don’t want this to haunt him for the rest of his life. How do I help him make better choices overall? How can I guide him without going so far that he begins to resent me? via /r/Parenting http://bit.ly/2GgsClf
