Tooth fairy visit gone wrong. How can I teach or encourage my 5 year old to be more grateful?

Kid lost his first tooth yesterday so we put it under his pillow last night. I told him that when he loses a tooth we’d put it under his pillow and then the tooth fairy would leave a “small prize”. I never mentioned money or anything specific. Queue to this morning at 6:30 am. I’m woken by him screaming and crying because he “didn’t get the thing that he wanted”. I just sat there silent while he cried realizing how embarrassing this is. Last night when he was asleep I swapped his tooth for a small Pete the Cat stuffed animal (which by the way, he loves Pete the Cat). Sure I could have left him money, but money is tight. I could have left him a toy but toys cost money and I had him with me all day. The stuffed animal was my best option as I bought it a while ago and was saving it for an occasion that seemed appropriate for it. Anyway, I told him to calm down and said that he should be thankful that the tooth fairy came and brought him anything at all. Also told him that if this is the way he responds to a gift from the tooth fairy then maybe next time she wouldn’t bring him anything at all. Lastly I told him that we could send it back and he could have nothing. I don’t know guys, I know it’s not easy teaching younger kids about what it’s like to be thankful for getting presents on holidays, spontaneous trips to get ice cream, or visits from the tooth fairy but I refuse to let my kid grow up to be an ungrateful brat.
