For reference, I have two kids, one in preschool and one in 2nd grade, and this post concerns the 2nd grader, “Zach.”Not so long ago, Zach loved to learn. I read with him a lot when he was younger and he enjoyed reading books on his own. He also enjoyed pretty much anything that involved learning, including practicing his writing and doing math problems, as well as anything else you can think of (especially learning more about dinosaurs!)After he started going to school, it seemed like that started to change. He stopped reading on his own, he stopped wanting to practice writing or math, and he seemed to stop taking an interest in much of anything involving learning. I figured that perhaps was normal behavior for a child who goes to school to learn all day, but this year it seems all of this has really taken a toll in his personality and happiness. Here’s what he says when I ask him about school:“It should be called ‘boring school’” “Recess is boring because we only get one” (he used to get 3 in preschool) “I hate boring school and I wish you didn’t make me go”This boy who used to love buying books and took them everywhere to read now cries and whines if I pull out a book. I don’t know, I just feel like I or school or both have failed him. His love of learning that seemed like such a natural part of his personality is just gone.Is there anything I can do to help him? Am I just overreacting? I don’t want his spirit to be crushed this early in life. He is too young to hate school so much! Plus, his little sister starts kindergarten next year, and I’m afraid of her picking up this attitude as well. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2NMnxlB
