Possible to become a Doctor?

My dad asked me what I want to do after highschool and I responded by saying I want to go to college and then medical school (then residency) to become a Physician. So after I said this my dad began to laugh and say basically how that's not possible and I have the same chance of becoming a NBA player. He then went on a rant about I can't go to college due to not having enough money to pay for tuition. So I brought up scholarships and student loans, also having a PT job.
