How to properly parent affluent kids?

I am a teacher but my husband is the VP of a major company and is internationally recognized in his field. As a result, we are very comfortable financially and live in an amazing school district. I have never seen a house sell for under 700,000 dollars here so most families are doing well. The poverty rate of the school is almost non existent. During National Red Nose day, I didn't have any student who could explain to me what it was or what it would be like to live in poverty. Most of them were making jokes about wants and needs. This is at a high school that is ranked 10/10 and has high expectations. They couldn't even properly identify wants and needs. We recently brought home our first child and I am very concerned about him growing up to be completely blind to what others are going through. I grew up in poverty and will tell him about my experience but it will still be pretty disconnected. What can I do? Does getting them involved with charitable organizations help? My biggest fear is raising a kid who has no concept of anything outside himself. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2LpUXVg
