Is it okay to miss important work trip for daughter's 1st birthday?

Alright so I don't travel much at all with my job, but we happen to have a 3 day work trip to our corporate office 8 hours away for training later this year and it happens to fall on my daughter's 1st birthday. The training is specifically for my job duties in the company and only the people who do what I do will be attending, which is about 30-40 employees out of the 300+ in the company. I'm 25 and I've only been with the company for 8 months so i feel like it's going to be tough for me to say I can't go. I really don't even know if I have a choice. I feel like I can't miss my daughter's 1st birthday but I don't know if this trip is something I can miss or not. In general, are companies usually understanding with this type of thing?
