My 4 year old is definitely close to being able to start to read. We've read to him since he was a newborn. We've always pointed out letters etc. He know knows all the letters by sight and knows some of the sounds. His dad and I were both born in the early 90s and we're taught phonics when learning to read. Though I couldnt read until I was 7. But it's my understanding that schools are now teaching a different method, though I'm not sure what it's called. We would like to do some more structured learning though we both strongly believe that play is the best way to learn. But he's just loving his pre-k work books and is definitely ready for something a little more.So from an academic stand point what have other parents and or teachers found to be the most effective method? Are phonics still a thing? Sorry lots of questions! via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2aNtujs
